A man turned to Reddit after his wife stopped his 14-year-old son from holding their newborn, citing safety concerns. However, she then handed the baby over to her sister the very next day. Unwilling to accept the hypocrisy, he decided it was only fair to apply the same rule. An argument ensued, but who’s in the wrong? Here’s the full story:
They Just Had a Baby
The Original Poster (OP) starts his tale by explaining that he and his wife just had a beautiful baby together. However, upon bringing the baby back home, they immediately ran into a problem…
She Didn’t Want His Son to Hold the Baby
OP wanted to let his 14-year-old son from a past relationship hold the baby. Alas, his wife had other ideas. She didn’t want him to, saying she felt uncomfortable about anyone apart from them holding the child.
He Wasn’t Happy About It
OP was upset by this, but decided to respect her wishes. After all, she’s a new mom, concerned about the vulnerability of their baby. He chose to “let it go.” However, the same rule should apply to everyone, right?
Her Sister Came Over
The argument happened when his sister-in-law (SIL) came over. She wanted to hold their baby, too. But no, said OP, they’re not yet comfortable letting anyone else hold him. At this, his wife suddenly changed her tune…
His Wife Said It Was Fine
OP’s wife had a change of heart. She said it was fine for her sister to hold the baby – that she’s a special case. OP stuck to his guns, though. Nope, he said, he wasn’t comfortable with it!
Now His Wife’s Furious
OP’s SIL found his refusal offensive and promptly left. His wife was angry, too, accusing him of being an ******* to her sister. But was he in the wrong, here? In OP’s words, wasn’t he “just being consistent”?
Reddit’s On His Side
People on Reddit flocked to OP’s defence. He wasn’t in the wrong here. His wife shouldn’t have stopped his son from holding their baby in the first place. As the top comment put it:
“Thank you for standing up for your son. He is 14, not a toddler. The day prior she was not comfortable, but now it’s fine for her sister?”
She’s a Hypocrite
Other Redditors pointed out that his wife had no right to be annoyed at him. After all, hadn’t she done exactly the same thing to his son? One comment read:
“‘My wife is angry with me and says I was an a****** to her sister.’ By that logic she is an a****** to your (underage) son.” Another top comment read, “Your wife can’t make one rule for some and not for the others.”
Speak To the Son
Some people suggested OP speak with his son about his relationship with his step-mom (OP’s wife). One said, “…Ask your son if he has ever had any weird situations with her.” Another wrote, “Please ask him if she ever made him feel uncomfortable or mistreated him.” In other words, there may be some other explanation for why she didn’t want him holding the baby. Or maybe it wasn’t the first time she’d done something to upset his son?
What Do You Think?
So whose side are you on? Do you think OP was right to seek “consistency” in who’s allowed to hold their baby? Or should he have let his SIL hold the child? Drop a comment with your thoughts!
