A woman was taken aback when her neighbor confronted her for wearing scrubs, claiming she hadn’t “earned the right” to wear them. To make matters worse, the neighbor took her grievances to Facebook. But was her point valid? Here’s the full story, straight from Reddit:
The Original Poster (OP) started by sharing a bit about her job history. Half a decade ago, before heading off to college, she worked at an upscale pet store as a kennel technician. Her manager made her wear scrubs to fit in with the professional setting, something which probably wasn’t necessary but was required nonetheless.
OP Had to Quit
When OP began college to pursue a history degree, she decided to leave this job in search of a higher-paying position. She was determined to self-finance her education without loans, and the pet shop job simply didn’t pay enough…
OP Kept Her Scrubs
Despite quitting, OP decided not to get rid of the scrubs. She found them too comfortable to throw out, so kept them as sweatpants for lounging around the house.
OP Ran Into Her Neighbor
Two days before posting on Reddit, OP had gone out to collect her mail while sporting these comfy scrub pants. Her neighbor happened to be outside at the same time, watering her lawn. Upon seeing the scrubs, the neighbor assumed that OP had been accepted into nursing school and congratulated her on selecting such a noble profession. She continued raving about healthcare personnel, also citing the example of her own daughter, who was a nurse.
OP quickly interrupted her neighbor to set the record straight. She explained that she wasn’t pursuing nursing school but was actually a history major, then clarified why she kept and wore the scrubs. What happened next was entirely unexpected…
Her Neighbor Lost Her Cool
Triggered by OP’s explanation, the neighbor began ranting about how OP was discrediting the hard work of healthcare professionals by wearing their attire. They told OP she’d done nothing to “earn the right” to wear scrubs and that OP was being disrespectful towards the medical profession by doing so. But that’s not all…
It Was “Stolen Valor”
The neighbor also said OP was guilty of “stolen valor,” when people dress up like military personnel, veterans, first responders, and so on, without actually being one. In other words, they want the respect those uniforms bring without making the sacrifices associated with them.
They Posted on Facebook
OP was “baffled” by the exchange – and it was worse later on. That afternoon, she logged on to Facebook to see that her neighbor had posted about the altercation. While they kept OP’s identity a secret, she continued her rant about the scrub situation. What was shocking to OP was that many people online sided with the neighbor…
OP Took To Reddit
After witnessing people on Facebook side with her neighbor, OP decided to share her side of the story on Reddit, asking people if she was truly at fault.
Reddit Was on OP’s side
OP’s Reddit post received many comments, most of which went in her favor. People seemed to agree that her neighbor had overreacted. One said, “It’s not weird at all. I’m a nurse, and I don’t see a problem with this. Scrubs are comfortable. Plus, there are actually quite a few non‐nursing jobs that use scrubs. Your neighbor is an idiot.”
What Are Your Thoughts?
What is your opinion? Do you think scrubs are exclusively for medical personnel, and by wearing them casually OP was being disrespectful towards healthcare professionals? Or was the neighbor just acting way out of bounds? Drop a comment to let us know.
