## How to Calculate the Answer to “What is 40 Percent of 60?”

### Option 1

In short, you can find 40% of 60 by multiplying 60 by 0.4.

In other words:

60 x 0.4 = 24.

But let’s dig a little deeper.

The first step in this calculation is to express 40% as a decimal.

To do so, you divide 40 by 100 to give 0.4*.

You then have to multiply that decimal by the other number.

Hence 60 x 0.4 = 24.

*This is the same process you use to convert any percentage to a decimal. If you’re plugging it into a calculator, simply divide the number (without the percentage symbol) by 100. For example, 5% as a decimal = 5/100 = 0.05.

Don’t have a calculator? Don’t worry.

Here’s a trick for doing it in your head:

When dividing any number by 100, move the decimal point 2 places to the left.

Why 2? Because that’s how many zeros there are after the number 1!

So 78 (which you can write as 78.0) divided by 100 = 0.78

And 178 divided by 100 = 1.78

It’s a similar process when dividing by 10, 1000, 10000, and so on as well.

In these cases, you’d simply move the decimal point 1 place, 3 places, and 4 places to the left, respectively (again, because of how many zeros come after the “1”).

For example:

78 divided by 10 = 7.8

78 divided by 1000 = 0.078

78 divided by 10000 = 0.0078

Want another way to work out 40% of 60?

Here’s how I sometimes do these types of calculations in my head.

First, I work out 10% of the number, because that’s generally simpler.

So, in this case I’d find 10% of 60.

10% of 60 = 6.

Next, I find the number that I’d multiply 10 by to get the final percentage.

So, in this example, 10 multiplied by what equals 40?

Or 10 x ? = 40

And, of course, 10 x 4 = 40.

Now I have everything I need to calculate 40% of 60.

Because 10% of 60 = 6.

And 40% = 10 x 4

I can multiply 6 by 4 to find my final answer.

6 x 4 = 24.

Confused? Here’s another example.

Let’s find 70% of 80.

I’d start by finding 10% of 80, which is 8 (remember, move the decimal one place to the left!).

Then I’d ask myself, “What must I multiply 10 by to get 70?”

And the answer’s “7”, right?

7 x 10 = 70.

So finally, to calculate 70% of 80, I have to multiply 8 by 7 (i.e. 10% of 80, multiplied by 7).

Which equals 56.

So 70% of 80?

56!

If we wanted to be sure, we could then check the answer with a calculator by doing 80 x 0.7 (which is 56!).

## If 40% of 60 is 24, Then 40 Is What Percent of 60?

This is a totally different calculation!

In essence, we’re asking:

“What must we multiply the number 60 by to get 40?”

Here’s how to do it:

First, divide 40 by 60. Then multiply the answer by 100 to express it as a percentage.

- 40/60 = 0.67 (rounded to 2 decimal places)
- 0.67 x 100 = 67%

So, 40 is what percent of 60?

67%.

Multiply that number as a decimal (0.67) by 60 and what do you get?

40.

Here’s another example, based on the previous calculation we were trying to do (i.e. 40% of 60).

This time, it’d be like asking:

“24 is what percent of 60?”

Which we know is 40%.

0.4 x 60? 24.
