An ex-soldier recently posted on Reddit about a doorman who, years ago, on a night out, took his military ID and wouldn’t give it back unless he paid up. Rather than comply, the soldier returned to the military base to get back up. Here’s the story…
The Original Poster (OP) begins by explaining that he was once in the Navy. One night, having just turned 21, he went to a bar with his colleagues to enjoy some live music.
He Had His Military ID
OP tried getting in with his Military ID because his out-of-state ID “was no good.” He admits that being “clean cut and close shaved” made him look young, but that didn’t justify the trouble he had at the door…
Turned Away At The Door
Despite OP’s ID being 100% legit, he tells readers that he wasn’t allowed in. Not only that, but the doorman decided to have some fun with him. He took OP’s Military ID, claiming it was fake.
OP Wanted His ID Back
OP informed the doorman it was a military ID and demanded it back, saying he couldn’t get back on base without it. But the doorman didn’t care. Instead, he tried to extort him…
The Shake Down
He told OP he could only have his ID back if he “coughed up $20.” The pair argued back and forth until the doorman told him to pay the money or leave.
OP Returned To Base Without His ID
With no other choice, OP returned to base without his ID. His friend drove him back, where he had to use his State ID to get on-site. That’s when OP decided to report his lost/stolen ID to the Officer Of The Day (OOD). His friend supported his story, and while he could have faced a “few days in the brig” for losing his ID, the OOD’s response couldn’t have been any better…
They Returned To the Bar
The OOD said, “Come on you two, we are going for a ride.” OP, the chief, and two marines with sidearms all headed back to the bar. When they arrived, the chief went straight up to the doorman and said, “Give me his ID now, or I will start looking for it myself.”
They Got His ID Back
Unsurprisingly, the doorman returned OP’s ID in a flash. But that wasn’t the end of it. The chief then walked inside, stood on a chair, and used “his parade ground voice” to tell all the military men to pay their tabs and leave. The place was now “on the prohibited list.”
Half the people in the bar upped and left, even though most were Reserve or Retired military. Apparently, the place was still on the list six months later…
Reddit Loved The Story
People on Reddit loved how the chief dealt with the doorman. One commented, “What an incredible show of you’re messing with the wrong guy here,” while another simply said, “You don’t [mess] with the active duty or veterans, they will boycott your business.” A third wrote: “Imagine losing half of your entire clientele over a power-tripping muscle bro and $20.”
Some Readers Shared Similar Experiences
Some of the top comments on Reddit referred to stories other military personnel had experienced. One explained how a Waffle House was put on the list after serving his “friend undercooked pork and eggs.” Another reader said he knew a business that once “Filed bankruptcy and left the state” after being put on the list.
What’s Your Take?
So, what do you think about OP’s situation? Did he respond in the right way? Was the chief’s response fair? Or do you think it went too far? Drop a comment with your thoughts.
