We’ve all pulled a few stunts to catch someone’s eye, but this Reddit user took it up a notch. His move? Slipping his accidentally overcalculated paystub under his neighbor’s door in an attempt to woo her. But did his unconventional tactic actually work? Keep reading to find out…
He Earns “a Decent Wage”
The Original Poster (OP) explains that his friend earns about £50k a year. That’s roughly USD $64k at the time of writing. However, this month it looked like he’d been given a pay raise…
He’d Been Paid More Than Usual
OP’s friend had just received his latest payslip and it showed £5,000 ($6,400) had been added to his wage. So, before tax, his monthly pay came to roughly £9k ($11,400).
It Was a Mistake
The problem for his friend was that it wasn’t legit. That extra £5k wasn’t to do with any over time or sales bonus. It was a simple accounting error and the company he works for identified it before they’d even sent him the money.
His Friend Saw an Opportunity
OP’s pal didn’t bat an eyelid, though. He still had the payslip, after all. In it, he saw “an opportunity to try and impress his attractive neighbor.”
He Posted It Through Her Letterbox
So, he took the payslip, put it in an envelope, and then slipped it through his neighbor’s door. His hope? That she’d open the envelope, see his name at the top, and be impressed by how much he’s (supposedly) earning…
She Posted It Back
OP’s friend’s neighbor posted the envelope back through his door soon after. It was open, so she’d obviously seen it. Encouraged by this first “success,” he’s now decided to post the wage slip to another neighbor – a man with a big house who shows off his money and has two fancy cars on his drive.
OP Thinks It’s Ridiculous
From OP’s perspective, all of this is “weird and pointless” and he’s told his friend as much. But he wanted a fresh perspective from people on Reddit. His perception of this wage slip shenanigans is correct, right?
Reddit Thought It Was Ridiculous, Too
Everyone on Reddit instantly sided with OP. Not only was it weird, said the top comment, but “it’s creepy” as well. That sentiment was backed up countless times. Someone else wrote, “Very creepy. The poor woman he posted his wage slip to, probably creeped her right out…He did her a favour by posting an equivalent to a red flag through her door.”
His Friend Must Have Problems
Another common conclusion from the Brits on Reddit was that OP’s friend sounds a little unhinged. One person wrote, “It’s extremely creepy and puts the friends’ mental age at about 5? It is a really worrying sign tbh, it’s the kind of thing you’d expect to see given as advice on incel forums…”
What Do You Think?
So what’s your perspective? Do you think those British folks on Reddit were too harsh? Or are they spot on? And would this have gone down differently in the US? Do you know anyone who would genuinely swoon after seeing someone’s high salary? Drop a comment with your thoughts.
