A guy got fancy first-class tickets from work for his efforts. However, he couldn’t afford the same for his wife, so he got her economy tickets. She then guilt-tripped him into giving up his comfy seats for hers. When he asked her about it, she didn’t feel sorry and said it was “his duty” as her husband. Who’s in the wrong here?
The Background
The Original Poster (OP) starts by explaining that her husband was picked from a long list of candidates to attend a work conference in Miami. It was a big honor – a reward and acknowledgment of his contributions to the company. He was allowed to take a spouse, but, because they’d be flying first-class, the company wouldn’t pay for their partner’s airfare too.
They Couldn’t Afford the Tickets
OP was stoked when her husband invited her along. However, things took a bad turn when they checked flight prices. First-class tickets were out of their budget. He asked her if she’d be happy flying coach while he flew in first. They’d both be in coach on the return leg, but they’d be in separate areas on the way.
She Was Angry
OP was not happy with this suggestion. She recognized the tickets were expensive and would put a strain on their bank balance. But, in her words, “What kind of man lives it up in first class while his wife sits in coach?” When she asked him that, he tried reasoning with her. After all, he was taking her on his work trip, and he’d earned that first-class seat…
She Wouldn’t Accept It
OP was still upset. In fact, she insisted that if they couldn’t both fly first-class, the gentlemanly thing for him to do was let her take his seat while he flew coach. They went back and forth on this for a while, but her husband eventually relented. He agreed to let OP take his seat.
Now He’s Mad
They had a good time in Miami, but OP’s husband has been angry at her ever since they got back. He’s still caught up on the seats, reminding her that he’d earned his first-class ticket and that, unlike her ticket, he’d got it for free. He says OP should have “let him enjoy what he’d earned instead of “guilting him out of it.””
OP Disagrees
From OP’s perspective, she hadn’t done anything wrong. Far from it. She thinks her husband’s “being a baby” and that, as a man, it’s only right that he put his wife’s comfort first. After all, he’d been cheap. From her perspective, it was only fair.
Their Parents Are Torn
OP and her husband turned to his parents, with whom they’re close, for advice/mediation. But they’re torn, too. His dad agrees he wasn’t being a gentleman by making her fly coach; his mom thinks OP should have let him have it because he’d earned it. So what does Reddit think?
Reddit Thinks She’s Wrong
People on Reddit thought OP was definitely in the wrong here. The most popular comment said, “His company comped the first class ticket for him. What kind of wife insists her husband give up the ticket his company paid for on his behalf so she could “live it up a little”? Why didn’t you just cover the cost difference of first class yourself?”
She’s Selfish and Manipulative
Others were even harsher. One person wrote, “Simple, she is selfish, entitled, manipulative, greedy… A me me me person. If your going to be financially hurting/strapped by buying a first Class ticket, then the reality is you cannot afford it and are trying to live above your means.”
And another said, “instead of being happy to see him enjoy a well-earned reward, she demanded to have it for herself instead. Sooooo incredibly selfish and entitled. I feel bad for her husband. I wonder if he gets to enjoy anything he’s worked hard for or if she just expects everything nice that comes his way should also be hers?”
What Do You Think?
So whose side are you on? Do you agree that OP’s husband should have given her his first-class seat? Or was she wrong to make that demand? Does she seem as entitled and selfish as people on Reddit thought? Drop a comment to let us know.
